A Pretty Awesome “Take Your Child To Work” Experience

Today is Take Your Child To Work Day and I just finished up with my 10-year old daughter Anisa.

Have you ever taken your child to work with you?  I never did….

The last couple of years when I asked her if she wanted to stay home with me as I worked my corporate job, she actually said she preferred to go to school instead. Woooooow.

So…this year…my first year as a full time entrepreneur, things were different.  Anisa was actually interested in what I was doing and wanted to hang out with me for the day.

Before 10:30 AM, she learned how to set up a website, how to outsource tasks on Fiverr.com, and how to send tweets on Twitter.

Highlight: After we goofed off looking at funny Fiverr gigs (like this one) for a few minutes, we got serious and found a couple graphic designers to hire and a programmer who could update php code for one of my websites.  Anisa asked why were doing it and after I explained she said “Wait, so you just paid $15 for 3 people to do something that would take you 6-8 hours to do? Cool!” {total proud mommy moment}

We went to Starbucks for an iced Chai latte and to meet up with a new real estate investor and then things got even more interesting….

At 11:30 AM, I had an accountability coaching call and I let Anisa listen in as I helped a friend work through his focused priorities for the day.  At the end of the call, he asks my daughter if she will serve as a consultant to him.  He writes children’s stories and wanted her expertise to make suggestions to improve his stories and also provide new ideas each week for more stories.  He gave her a proposal and asked her to think about it and let him know what questions she had.

After some discussion and answered questions, she decided to move forward with the opportunity, and so my daughter’s first Take Your Child To Work experience was a smashing success! She learned a few things about business (like the importance of leveraging others to get important stuff done) AND landed her first consulting gig.

Highlight: She’s going to try to hire her best friend as an employee so that she can get him to do some of the work and she’ll still get paid.  BOOYAH! {an even prouder mommy moment}

Next up: teaching her how to invoice her first client.

All in all, it was a pretty awesome day with my daughter.

Did any of you take your children to work with you today? Would love to hear about it!

Thanks Joey! We’re doing our best to expose her so that she will have options!

I’m still tripping of the “sub-contracting” arrangement.

I bet her friend will be pleased as punch too… not knowing what Anisa’s “spread” is on the deal. Ha ha!

    This is beautiful.

She’s learning things most of us are just now working out.

Do I smell a “Rich Kid, Poor Kid” book series?

That is just the coolest story! I think you are doing a great job of teaching your kids what schools do not, How to actually make money and handle it properly.

Hmmm….You should teach that to adults!! ;)

HA! I am TOTALLY ordering a dancing-hot-dog-gram! I just can’t decide which song I want her to dance to…

Sounds like Anisa had a great day at home with you! That’s awesome about the job opportunity- is Justin going to be her employee?

Steph, I knew you’d get a kick out of the dancing hot dog :-)

She hasn’t confirmed Justin as an employee yet….I don’t even think she asked him about it yesterday…she was just having him help her out (perhaps testing the waters…LOL!)

They do say on oDesk to do a TEST with your potential virtual assistant first… before actually hiring them.

        Wiseness.

    Shae,

On a track like that, she we will be teaching you in a few years. I think you started a spark of a very successful woman in the future.

Twenty years from now, when she is interviewed, they will ask “what was your first entrepreneur experience?” She’ll have a great story to tell.

    Great post.

    Hi Shae,

What an awesome story! I bet your daughter will appreciate these lessons not just now but in the future!

It’s funny, yesterday was our “Take your daughters and sons to work day” at our Company. I thought to myself that it was too bad that my daughter is too young for this and when she’ll be old enough, I’ll (hopefully) be self-employed, so she won’t be able to participate. So, your story just just showed me that I can still make this experience beneficial, even when you are working for yourself! Thanks!!

Yes, absolutely! There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the day with your daughter once you leave your 9-to-5. Quite honestly, it would’ve been hard to show much enthusiasm with my daughter the last couple of years at my job and at the time I would’ve been able to show her enthusiasm, I was traveling to colleges a LOT and working with students, and it would’ve been hard to pull off including her in that (due to the travel).

    Shae,
This was a great post that I’ll use on day. I’ve been teaching my 4 year old son about money; it’s not too early to start. Every week we go over the different types of dollars and coins on a chart my wife bought him. He’ll point to the coin/dollar and state the value. Then we’ll go over to his piggy bank and empty it. I’ll tell him to place all the quarters back in the piggy bank; then all the dimes, and so on. We need to teach our kids about money since no one else does or they learn it the wrong way.

You’re absolutely right…it’s never to early to start! I think that’s great, Tom. Thanks for sharing and thanks for stopping by!

    Shae,
No problem. I actually stop by ever few days to check on any new updates. I think it’s really great what you’re doing with the multiple streams of income and your team.
