27 Days

Today is a day that I’m going to remember for years to come.

May 4, 2010.

The day that I shared with all of you that my season of being a 9-to-5er in Corporate America is quickly coming to an end and a new season of full time entrepreneurship is on its way.

In exactly 27 days.  Memorial Day 2010 is my new anniversary for freedom.

Freedom to aggressively pursue the dreams that God has placed in my heart.

Freedom to work towards those dreams on a daily schedule of my own design.

Freedom to

Just

Be

Free.

No, I did not get laid off.

However, truth be told….I’ve spent the past 6 months secretly wishing that I would be laid off.  Why? Because then I wouldn’t have to do the hard work of taking a leap of faith and leaving on my own (plus  the 6 months of severance pay for my nearly 11 years of service would’ve been a sweet bonus too).

For those who know me personally (outside of the blog), you know that this day has been a long time coming.

In January of last year I made a goal that I wouldn’t celebrate 11 full years in Corporate America (August 31, 2010 would be my 11th anniversary at my job).  I had a checklist of things I wanted to accomplish by June 30, 2010 before leaving to go full time to grow our businesses plus get to work on a much larger mission of mine that will have impact on the lives of thousands of college students and young professionals.

Guess what? My checklist isn’t complete. For probably the first time, my checklist isn’t complete.  Partially complete, but not fully complete. I truly believe this is all by design.  It’s not much of a faith walk when you have your entire lengthy checklist taken care of, is it?

I’m leaving anyway.  The day that I finally made the decision (this took about 4-5 months), I was 100% sure that my decision was not just a good idea, but a God idea (and those are the best ones – the ones you can take to the bank!).

I’m really grateful to all of you for reading and continuing to share ideas and encourage me every step of the way.  I’m looking forward to sharing this journey with you. I plan to still talk about our real estate investing adventures on this blog, but I hope that you’ll enjoy hearing about some of the other things we’re up to in life and in business and the lessons we’re learning from that too.

This blog is evolving – just like I am.  I’m ready.  Let’s go!

Big time Congratulations Shae! It seems like you have been following a great path and you know the value of God’s plan and how it might match your plan. True faith is knowing that God’s plan is the one to follow. You my friend seem to have found it.

Good luck to you in your final month. Looking forward to reading how you make the transition. Someday in the near future I hope to do the same.

@Scotty, your time IS coming! Keep at it. You’re obliterating debt, saving, focusing on additional income with real estate. You’re doin’ it, bud!

@Eric, thank you so much — I really appreciate it! It’s been a bit of a personal journey and struggle to get to this point of doing what I know I’m supposed to do. Now that I’m over the hump, it feels fantastic!

@Alex, thanks! Definitely a memorable day…I’m trying to figure out how best to celebrate on Memorial Day :-)

Wow Shae, this is big! I think by you actually taking this leap of faith shows you truly believe in what you are doing and what you want in life. And, having faith and belief is a big part of success. Without it, it’s very hard to succeed. Thanks for sharing this momentous event in your life, looking forward to continuing to follow in your journey! :)

Hey Carey, thanks! Phil absolutely loves his work as a massage therapist. He works at a place called Massage Envy (but not standard 9-to-5 hours), and he also has private clients. Shae … I am so excited!!! And proud. I already screamed for joy for you … which you know. But what I didn’t know was that your checklist wasn’t complete. And I can relate to that in such a big way. Ever since I was 22 years old I said “By the age of 35 I would be free from having a job.” And I carried around this little list of things that needed to be in place to do that … and I made serious progress towards achieving those things but the day I quit my job I actually didn’t have ANY SINGLE thing on that list in place. And I still don’t and I’m 17 months into being job free … For me the quitting thing had been something I always knew would happen but the exact moment I decided to quit was a very specific one. One I never could have planned.

Anyway … when I decided finally and officially to quit my list didn’t matter anymore. And it turns out most of those things were really just excuses holding me back from taking the leap. They seemed practical and sensible (paying off my mortgage, having a certain amount of money in the bank) but the reality is we are doing just fine without having checked those things off our list. In fact we’re doing better than fine because we are living our life on our terms, contributing to society in the best way we possibly can today and working towards greater contributions in the future.

Today I am SO glad I didn’t wait until 35 to leave my job. Leaving my job was absolutely the best decision I made … not a second of regret has gone by. Not saying it’s been easy … sometimes I miss the comfort of a pay cheque … but the reality is the same thing that felt like security was actually the exact thing that was holding me back from achieving great things. I believe the same is true for you. And seriously – I CANNOT wait to see the amazing things you will do with all your time because you already were a rock star in my mind. Now with your time 100% your own … LOOK OUT WORLD IS RIGHT STEPH!!! :)

CONGRATS SHAE!!! I’m in your corner … let me know if there is anything I can do to support you!!!

@P-Rid, thanks buddy! Really appreciate you :-)

@Julie, you’re awesome and thank you! Thanks for sharing about your list. You & I have a lot in common LOL! One of the things on my list was to have a year’s worth of expenses in our emergency fund. HA! I’m not even close. We’ve been out of debt (outside of our mortgage) for awhile now and have a solid emergency fund plus reserves for our businesses, but we certainly don’t have 12 months worth! I had to let that go. It was an excuse. Another thing on my list was to find a healthcare solution. Still don’t have one! At least not a long term solution…we have COBRA for 18 months which will be expensive but definitely manageable until we find something that will work better for us. I’ll be blogging about stuff like this….I think it will help others. Thanks again, Julie!

As far as healthcare goes Shae, try Aetna. Let me tell you, I have been turned down for healthcare for as long as I can remember with my self-employed self and it was because of heartburn.

Recently, I came across an insurance broker that told me Aetna may be my best bet. I applied and Aetna called me and asked me a bunch of questions but then I was approved!!!!

Also, you may be able to find an insurance broker that will group a bunch of self-employed folks together to get health insurance. I know a few that do it for Realtors. Perhaps there is one that do it for massage therapists?

As it turned out, I decided to stay on Kathy’s insurance but it is nice to know that if I ever need it that Aetna will finally approve me! :-)

So definitely check them out! Btw, perhaps things may be different now with the new healthcare stuff that’s going down…I dunno. That wasn’t happening when I need insurance lol

Good luck! But definitely get on the health insurance ball because you don’t want to potentially have to get your wisdom teeth out, get an infection and have a 34k hospital bill that you’re stuck with!!! (Thankfully my entire bill was paid…and not by me! Sometimes, I really do love health insurance and supplemental insurance lol)

    Good luck Shae!

My 2 cents. Be addicted to momentum. Do not be addicted to outcome. When you become too addicted to the outcome, the setbacks become maddening. Then it is hard to get momentum again.

Momentum is your drug. Become addicted. When you are in that zone, things are just going to start popping. You are going to sound and feel like Gordon Gecko on the phone. Things are just going to happen. Your excitement and confidence will come through on the phone.

And when you experience the valleys of momentum, and you will, your number 1 job is to create momentum. Even if all of sudden nothing is happening, its a day where you say “sh!t, I have nothing going on, I dont know where to start”, your mission is to create motion. Call back sellers that were even vaguely luke-warm from months ago that you have not followed up with, just to be doing something. This reinvigorated momentum creates positive motion which will give you new ideas and confidence that you are moving in the right direction.

I can’t stress this enough. I wish someone gave me this advice years ago when I put away my 1st attempt at REI. I gave up and it was due to lack of momentum. I misunderstood momentum. I thought that things would always be popping, and when they weren’t I was so defeated. I did not realize that it is the defining moment of your success.

When there is no momentum it is your #1 priority to create it.

“Do the thing and you will have the power” – Emerson

Hey Chris! That is brilliant advice and I really appreciate it. As far as your comment on outcomes…I hear you…one of the things Thom Scott told us at the Extreme Business Makeover event was how he was in the process of losing weight…and while his outcome is to be healthy and weighing X number of pounds, his first focus was to be obese…then to be overweight….then to be slightly on the chubby side…you get the point. Appreciating the fact that there are milestones and each of those are successes. I think that helps us maintain momentum as well.

Thanks again for sharing your experience with me — it means a lot. I’ve seen you around the blogs and you’re always sharing awesome advice – thank you :-)

Chris – that was brilliant advice. It does kind of cause you to self destruct a bit. By shifting the focus to progress I have overcome some of that defeated and down feeling that comes with obstacles and challenges … but momentum focus is brilliant. Shae,

After much prayer and resistance I moved to Las Vegas to start a bank. A new board did not renew my contract on April 15, after 19 years in banking. I had the opportunity to meet wonderful people including a now former director of the bank that has been investing in trustee sale properties for several years. In just 3 short weeks, I’ve already partnered with him for my first purchase of a beautiful 1700 sq ft home in a nice Vegas neighborhood for $100,000. Zillow market is $212,500 and I’ve got ity listed for fast resale at $146,000. I’ve procured several investors as partners for which I’m paid a nice commission. Today, I’ve been contacted by a funder who will allow me to leverage 4 times my equity investment to purchase additional properties. As I expect net returns of no less than 15% within 3 month turns, this provides me with cash flow that exceeds my executive CFO salaries. It is very satisfying, giving me freedom to see blue skies, work with others who truly enjoy the same privileges of time and cash flow and allows me to soar to pursue the dreams instilled within me. We’re really good at this in this particular market. I’ve brought skills to set up investors using Real Estate IRAs and to partner smaller investor funds using LLCs. I’m always accepting new partners who want to travel to Vegas on tax write-offs and enjoy all the free shows us locals get with Nevada addresses! Email me and I’ll be happy to send you more information.
